BEFORE you send ANYTHING to an insurance carrier, consider having a consult with Mori. She can advise you whether your notes will pass or what you can do if they aren’t up to current standards. Don’t take the word of the carrier when they tell you they aren’t going to pay for your claims, or worse – WANT money back. Get a PROFESSIONAL opinion of your documentation BEFORE you send it to the carriers by a subject matter expert in Acupuncture billing and coding. (Mori is a Certified Professional Coder – same credentials as the reviewers hired by the insurance companies, however THEIR coders don’t have 35 years of acupuncture experience!)

Deeper Insight
If you are involved in a large audit and have already submitted notes and gotten back a less than satisfactory answer, Mori can review exactly what the insurance carrier reviewed and, in many cases, give a more informed review than what the carrier provided. Her reports and opinion carry weight and have opened the door for reduced denials and the end of requests for documentation.

Know What’s Necessary
For larger reviews Mori will give you an estimate of the time necessary to review all records and supply a complete report that can be used as a rebuttal to the carrier’s claims. Her reports are thorough and begin with a review of documentation highlighting positive aspects and when billed codes match documentation. (Carriers NEVER see what you are doing right!)

She looks for evidence of time for timed-based procedures as many carriers are asking for documentation of time NOT relevant to the treatment as a bogus means to deny payment or request refunds. She’ll review carrier’s policies for accuracy as many carriers expect acupucture notes to conform to rehabilitation notes, or have “internal” policies for documentation.
